How to Fix your Cracked Heels at Home

When the skin on the bottom of your feet becomes dry, callused or cracked, it hurts. To prevent any serious complications, it’s important to take care of sore feet right away. Ignoring cracked feet can lead to infection and in time, transition into more serious health problems. Walking could even become extremely difficult!

Regular foot care should be a part of your beauty and grooming routine. Exfoliating the dead skin on the bottom of your feet will minimize the chances of developing cracks, calluses, and other sources of foot pain.

What Causes Cracked Heels?

Heel fissures can happen to anyone, but there are certain conditions that increase the likelihood this problem. Dried out feet can occur for a number of reasons, including:

  • Cold winter weather
  • Living in a dry climate
  • Dehydration
  • Excessively hot baths or showers
  • Skipping moisturizer
  • Using harsh, drying soaps
  • Standing for excessive periods of time
  • Aging
  • Having diabetes, hypothyroidism or any type of auto-immune disorder

How to Fix Cracked Heels

#1 Soak ‘em – Use lukewarm water combined with your favorite liquid soap or DIY foot scrub to soak feet for about 15-20 minutes. Avoid using excess hot water as this will remove the oils from the skin.

#2 Exfoliate the feet  – Following the soak, use a Callus Remover Foot File or the Pumice Stone on our Face and Body Brush System to remove the top layers of dead skin from the feet. Scrubbing too hard or too frequent can split skin even further. Exfoliate at least once a week or up to once a day.

#3 Moisturize – After patting feet dry, apply your favorite moisturizer.

#4 Wear socks to bed – After moisturizing, put socks on to lock in the foot cream overnight.

#5 Drink water – As with the rest of your body, if your skin is not getting a sufficient amount of water, it can turn dry, tight and less resilient. Chronic dehydration can lead to cracks and fissures on the feet.

#6 Pick the correct shoes – The pressure of pounding your feet on the ground when you walk can cause cracks in the skin. Wear shoes that cover your feet whenever you can. Constant exposure to air (think flip-flops and sandals) dries out the skin leading to more cracks.

#7 Avoid going barefoot outside – If your feet are cracked and dry, do not spend time outdoors barefoot. Bacteria and germs can cause more serious infections.
